The story behind Dervishes is particularly important. In reality, Dervishes are Sufi Muslim Ascetics who are living, by choice, in poverty by enforcing austerity in their everyday life. The main notion behind this is that, they need to minimise their ego in an effort to reach God. In folklore tradition, people believe that Dervishes are capable of doing miracles, due to the connection they share with God. Our Whirling Dervish Cappadocia Ceremony presents the 1-hour Mavlevi Sema performance. The whole ceremony is a ritual, forming a symbolic representation of the stages that Dervishes are going through in order to reach their ultimate goal in life, God. The performance starts with a prayer to Prophet Mohammed. The, Dervishes take their place and begin the infamous Circling of Veled. The circling part is probably the most important one. This is because it symbolises the resurrection from the grave.
What really makes this ceremony special is that, every single part of the process has its own unique hidden meaning. In what regards the Dervishes’ clothes, the cloak represents the grave, and their hat symbolises the gravestone. During the Circling of Veled, Dervishes will start to remove their cloak in an effort to represent their spiritual freedom. This is the particular phase when they are trying to reach God. The lights, the music, the performances, and the whole atmosphere, make Cappadocia Dervishes Ceremony a lifetime experience. By the end of the show, you will enjoy a comfortable ride back at your hotel. The ceremony will fill you with an incredible blend of emotions and spectacular memories.

The mystical ceremony of the whirling dervishes is an essential part of a visit to Turkey- in my opinion. The setting was stellar and we left with a sense of wonder. This is the second time I have seen the whirling dervish ceremony. It helps to know what to expect because it’s all done in silence to the sounds of music that is not familiar to western ears. This is a better venue than the place I saw it before because there are tiered stands so you can see easily without having to peak between peoples’ heads. It helps to read a little about the Sema before the ligths go down and they give you a little brochure which explains the ceremony very well. Saruhan is one of the historical caravanserais located on Silk road route in Cappadocia. Once you enter the building, you get the feeling of you travel back to 12th C. AD when the caravans and camels travelled and moved into this road side inn to protect themselves. It is the best place to experience the 700 years old Dervish ( Sema) Ceremony . It does really give you this relaxing and retreating feeling! When that is over, there was cinnamon tea in the courtyard of the venue, followed by a movie projected on a courtyard wall that told the story of Cappadocia. Do not miss out!
