In fact, what helped the archaeologists complete the excavations was the discovery of a copy of the peace treaty between Hattushili III and the Pharaoh Ramses II. Hence, that made the identification of the ancient settlement easier.

When you arrive there, expect to feel impressed by the imposing size, and majestic ruins that this city has. More precisely, during the 13^th century BC, Hattusha was surrounded by imposing defensive walls, with a perimeter of 8km. As you walk through this ancient site, you will also observe the necropolis, and the sanctuary of Yazılıkaya. Their ruins are decorated with bas-reliefs, a typical characteristic of Hittite art. Of course, Hattusha has many more to demonstrate. Expect to visit the Great Temple, the Lion Gate, the King’s Gate, and the Sphinx Gate. The most notable of them is the Great Temple, which was dedicated to the god of storms, and the goddess of sun. On the north side of the Great Temple, there is an Assyrian settlement, partly constructed during the pre-Hittite period.
